Diary
June 15, 2021 – Ups & downs, love comedowns, lockdowns and breakdowns… It’s been an emotional couple of months for me, personally. But with the help of friends, family and community, I’m staging my first ever photography show. Dylan Eccleston is scheming a warm and welcoming space to showcase some noteworthy moments in my artist journey from the past decade. My subconscious has found so many excuses to kick this can down the road but here it is. Letting go and trusting that this is the next step.
June 17, 2021 – We are now in the early stages of laying out the physical space where I’ll be having my first every photography showing. For two weeks, a space in Seaport Village in Downtown San Diego is being transformed into the Phoenix Syndrome photo gallery. Art directed by my art husband, Dylan Eccleston, we’re excited to present a showing of some of my noteworthy work from the past decade. I will be updating this page very soon with more info on how to get there, what to expect for our kick-off party on June 26 and a full listing of all the amazing people and entities who have helped manifest this powerful and important experience. Check back for more info here very soon!
June 17, 2021 – Here is what the space looks like right now…
June 23, 2021 – So here’s all that’s happening…
1) There was a last minute snafu. An oversight. An omission or misunderstanding, if you will. We were informed that the space Dylan had been creatively planning for and in the process of building was not supposed to be available and we had to vacate immediately. So there was a little tension for a couple of hours there last night. But! It’s been worked out and we were given another space right around the corner. It’s not better or worse, but it did mean Dylan had to throw out a big chunk of what he’d been planning around for the past month or so (along with the painting and light instals he’d already done along with help from Amanda). There is a team of top men scrambling to get the space cleared out so we can get in there later today. The show is still on!
2) We have the setlist for the Platform Collection’s live Hip-hop block. KillCRey and Hip Hop Eddie booked a solid lineup feature live performances by Memo the Plug, Bizzy Balboa, Rutes and Yazi. I’ll have all their links up on mrarash.com/ps shortly.
3) Newest episode of Burner Podcast is up and it’s an interview with Dr. Amanda Lucia, author of White Utopias: The Religious Exoticism of Transformational Festivals. My favorite takeaway: exoticism might be described as like the total opposite of nationalism. And it becomes problematic when we really like another culture’s “stuff” but have like no connection at all with the actual people.
4) Prints for the show are arriving today. I’m laying out the final deets for the survival guide for the show. And by Saturday intending to have a full virtual gallery of the prints along with all their stories so visitors can read about the pieces as they explore the space.
5) Navjeet is working on having happy hour DJs in our space every day around the happy hour block. If you wanna jump on the decks for a couple of hours shoot him a message!
It’s honestly all flowing together. Dylan and I just keep coming back to the visual of it all being like a wave and we’re just riding whichever one comes next.
